
In 1992, Sevier County built one of the most state-of-the-art solid waste facility in the world. Only 10 similar facilities exist. Due to superior composting technologies and recycling programs, Sevier County is able to reduce the total solid waste production by 70% compared to the national average of 27%.

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (Jan.26, 2009) – TripAdvisor’s Senior Vice President, Robin Ingle, visited Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies on Monday, January 26 to officially present the aquarium with a trophy that declares it the Number One Aquarium in the United States. Ingle was joined at the media luncheon by Susan Whitaker, commissioner of tourism for the state of Tennessee. The award was presented by Ingle to Jim Pattison, Jr., president of Ripley Entertainment Inc.
The aquarium’s top ranking was determined based on traveler popularity, consumer ratings and TripAdvisor editors.
“This is such a great honor to be named as the top aquarium in the U.S. We are very proud especially since the results are based upon the reports from our guests,” said Steve File, general manager. “It’s good to know that so many of our visitors are willing to share their feelings and recommend us as a high quality family entertainment experience.”

ORLANDO, Fla. – After winning two national titles there is a thought that maybe one would be complacent or that time would catch up with them. Tennessee’s dance team left no doubt and put to rest any thought of complacency in the semi-finals on Saturday night and then proceeded to nail its third straight national crown, in the Jazz Division, in resounding fashion on Sunday night at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports.
It was a just one of a few highlights that again solidified Tennessee as one of the top spirit programs in the country.
Coming into the competition Tennessee’s cheer squad had to fight its way through the semi-finals to reach the championship night. Having 13 first time competitors and only two returnees, just making the finals was not a given thought. But with great passion and tenacity the young squad performed near flawlessly in the semis to gain a spot in the finals on Sunday.

Two all-new shows—Le Grande Cirque’s Imaginé, showcasing international performers from around the world, and Sha-Kon-O-Hey! Land of Blue Smoke, celebrating the music and people of the Great Smoky Mountains—headline Dollywood’s 2009 season.
