
In 1992, Sevier County built one of the most state-of-the-art solid waste facility in the world. Only 10 similar facilities exist. Due to superior composting technologies and recycling programs, Sevier County is able to reduce the total solid waste production by 70% compared to the national average of 27%.

Starting in May 2009, Dollywood guests will be able to fly like an eagle over the 150 acre theme park and experience the majesty of the Great Smoky Mountains with the opening of SkyZip. SkyZip is the first multiple station zip-line experience to open in a U.S. theme park.
“SkyZip is the first of a series of premium experiences Dollywood plans to launch in the coming year. These high level family experiences are ‘ready-to-go’ meaning our guests just show up for the thrills, no previous experience or expensive gear needed,” said Ken Bell, president of Dollywood. “These deeper, personalized experiences will challenge our guests and often, fulfill lifelong dreams.”
Beginning early summer, the hour-long, premium SkyZip adventure will include up to five zip-line treks ranging in length from 100 to nearly 1,000 feet and a 100-foot long swinging bridge perched above the trees. Springtime means it’s time for the Vol Network’s “Inside The Orange” television series across the state of Tennessee. The 2009 season premier of “Inside the Orange” debuts this weekend with an informative and inside look at the current events surrounding University of Tennessee athletics. This fast-paced, 30-minute magazine-style show takes exclusive looks at spring football, men’s and women’s postseason basketball, baseball and all spring sports being played by the Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Vols.
The “Inside The Orange” series runs for eight straight weeks.

Entertainment superstar, East Tennessee native and official ambassador of the 75th anniversary of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP), Dolly Parton has released a new eight-song commemorative CD entitled Sha-Kon-O-Hey! to benefit Friends of the Smokies.
The CD retails for $10, $8 of which Parton is donating during 2009 to the non-profit Friends of the Smokies, an organization devoted to preserving and protecting GSMNP by raising funds and public awareness.
“Having grown up and lived in the heart of these beautiful mountains, my love for this area is deep, genuine and heartfelt,” Parton said. “The mountains have inspired so much of my music, and these new songs convey my love for this area as well as the folks like me who call the Great Smoky Mountains home.”

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Superintendent Dale A. Ditmanson has announced that an 18 month-long project to repave 6.5 miles of the Park’s Newfound Gap Road (U.S. 441) is set to begin on March 16.
Newfound Gap Road serves as the primary visitor access to many of the Park’s most popular trailheads and scenic overlooks and is a heavily-traveled north-south artery between the tourist hubs of Cherokee, NC, and Gatlinburg, TN. The section to be resurfaced extends from the Collins Creek Picnic Area intersection south to the Park’s boundary with Cherokee, NC.
The work will be performed under a $9,922,175 contract with APAC Atlantic, Inc., and will be funded and administered by the Federal Highway Administration’s Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division. Completion of the work is expected by September 1, 2010.

ACADEMIC & ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS
During the 2007-08 school year more than 80 student-athletes graduated from the University of Tennessee in 27 different majors. Fifteen student-athletes were Chancellor Citation recipients and six were Academic All-Americas.
In the fall of 2008, 216 student-athletes had a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
UT men’s athletics won the 2007-08 SEC All-Sports Trophy while the Lady Vols finished fourth.
