The following are my top 10 picks for must watch TV Series in 2012. With a plethora of new and returning shows hitting our screens this year any number of series deserved a place on this list:

1. AWAKE

This is the story of a police detective who lives two alternating, parallel lives following a car accident that takes the life of a family member. One life is lived with his wife and the other with his son. Is one life reality and the other just a dream? The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes. (Season 1 – 8 Episodes known)

Stars: Dylan Minette, Jason Isaacs, Daniela Bobadilla and Terrence Edwards.

2. HOMELAND

Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody returns home eight years after going missing in Iraq. His surprising arrival sparks the interest of Carrie Mathison, a driven (and possibly unstable) CIA officer who suspects he might have terrorist intentions. The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes. (Season 1 – 12 Episodes)

Stars: Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, Morena Baccarin and David Harewood.

3. ALCATRAZ

This is essentially a modern prison break drama with a myriad of surprising twist’s. Filmed on location on Alcatraz Island, San Francisco and Vancouver, this ‘Lost’ style mystery provides new clues to the story with each episode. It even includes ‘Lost’ favorite Jorge Garcia in the cast. (Season 1 – 9 Episodes known)

Stars: Sara Jones, Jonny Coyne, Jorge Garcia and Jeffrey Pierce

4. LUCK

With a superb cast this series is based on the dramas of a horseracing track. First class cast and acting as with most HBO productions and the cinematography is superb. There is a sensational mix of gambling and romance throughout. The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes. (Season 1 = 9 Episodes known)

5. AMERICAN HORROR STORY

This is the story of a family who move from Boston to Los Angeles with the intent of rebuilding their lives. A decision to take up residence in a restored mansion proves devastating as they discover the home is haunted. The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes. (Season 1 – 12 Episodes)

6. RINGER

The story of a young woman on the run from the mob who poses as her wealthy twin sister in order to conceal her true identity. She soon discovers however that her sister has a price on her head as well. The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes. (Season 1 – 22 Episodes)

7. HOUSE OF LIES

Don Cheadle is superb as a self-loathing consultant from an A-List management firm. As a highly successful, cutthroat consultant he uses any means (or anyone) necessary to achieve the results his clients desire. (Season 1 – 12 Episodes known)

8. THE FIRM

Based on the best-selling novel by “John Grisham”, this new series details the operations of a law firm operating as a front for the Chicago mafia. Following a stint behind bars principal lawyer Mitchell McDeere emerges to reclaim his position only to find his past still lurks in the shadows and new dangers are ahead. This one looks the goods. (Season 1 – 22 Episodes)

Stars: Josh Lucas, Callum Keith Rennie and Molly Parker

9. PRIME SUSPECT

Based loosely on the British TV miniseries of the same name. Jane Timoney is an iconic female detective who has to make her mark in a tough New York precinct that is dominated by men. The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes (Season 1 – 13 Episodes)

Stars: Maria Bello, Brian F. O’Byrne, Kirk Acevedo and Peter Gerety

10. HELL ON WHEELS

Set in the 1860s this new series centers on former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannan. His quest for vengeance has led him to the Union Pacific Railroad’s westward construction of the first Transcontinental Railroad. The series returns in 2012 with all new episodes. (Season 1 – 10 Episodes)
