After airing for 25 years, the popular “The Heartland Series” television show is suspending production.
The Heartland Series was conceived in 1984 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It celebrates the people and the land of the entire Appalachian region, presenting re-enactments of historic events and features stories about regional culture.
WBIR general manager Jeff Lee cited economics as the reason for production. He said that the station would continue to air the hundreds of episodes already produced “for as long as the viewers like them.”
