Since 2004, area men have an easy way of getting checked during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September with “Eddie Check,” the Eddie Kirkland Memorial Blood Drive and free PSA screening for prostate cancer. This event combines a MEDIC blood drive with blood sample collection for PSA analysis in multiple convenient locations across east Tennessee.
Nisus Corporation, a Blount County-based manufacturer of green products for the professional pest management industry, along with MEDIC Regional Blood Center, and Covenant Health’s Thompson Cancer Survival Center, is again hosting this unique event. Eddie Check is named in honor of prostate cancer victim Eddie Kirkland, father of Nisus Corporation president and CEO Kevin L. Kirkland. Nisus marketing vice president Jim Gorman also has a personal stake in the event as a prostate cancer survivor.
Eddie Check 2009 will be offered in Sevier County on Thursday, September 17, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., at Wilderness in the Smokies Year Round Water Park and Resort. Free PSA screenings will be available for men wishing to receive this test. MEDIC will be on location for blood donations, and lab technicians from Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center will be assisting with the PSA screenings. NewsTalk 100 will be on-site with a live remote with Phil Williams, from 3 – 6 p.m.
Free MEDIC “Gator Hater” t-shirt and cholesterol evaluation for blood donors. No fasting necessary for PSA or blood donation. One donation per year exempts you and your IRS dependents from paying blood supplier processing fees at any U.S. hospital. Donors must have a positive I.D.
