They live their lives as a passage way, sing songs of love and happiness and have given music a real reason to be blasted over the radio, but for Knoxville Rock Band The Fine Line it’s about sharing their lives and giving their fans a live show that will leave them feeling refreshed and replenished. With their ability to revive a heartbeat and passion for life and a brand new album set to release, HometownSevier.com decided to sit down with The Fine Line and focus in on their drive, music, and what’s in-store for this creative and passionate rock band from East Tennessee.
Tell us about The Fine Line, band members, who you are, and how The Fine Line came about?
The Fine Line is a project that I (Kirk Wynn) created in 2007 after I left a band that I had been with for over 4 years. I loved this band, but I was playing drums and I felt like there was more for me to offer musically and spiritually to the music community. I started writing and recording on my own about a year before I officially left that band. When I left, my partner and lead guitarist Josh Jordan, who also played with that band, came with me to try something new and spread his wings as an artist. The Fine Line is all about engaging the culture. Our songs are written to grab the attention of not only the Christian scene, but the secular scene as well. We are reaching out to everyone musically…not just one specific group of people.
Your first full-length debut album is titled “The Fine Line”. Who produced this album and what was the process of recording it?
Honestly, the first album was just an experimental project. Josh Jordan and I were just looking to get our music recorded and see where it could go. I had already written so much of the music. It was only when Yoda came in and started throwing in his ideas…that the album really started to take shape and officially become The Fine Line. I produced, arranged, and tracked most of the album myself including all of the instrumental work except some of the lead guitars and bass guitars. This album was my release and I was so ready to get my ideas out…that I just started recording it all myself. [laughs]
A lot of the songs on “The Fine Line” seem to be on the verge of Secular and Mainstream but have a backbone of Christian Music. Was this something you did to reach out to more of your fans?
Yes. As much of our musical background that is rooted in the Christian scene, it’s been our goal with this album to take the so-called “Christian” sound and make it our own. We give you a mainstream sound, with a message that’s understood.
My favorite song from this record is a song called “Whisper”. Do you have a favorite song from this album? Why?
[Kirk] Musically my favorite song from the record is a song called “Heartbeat”, but lyrically…I would have to say “Whisper” as well. [laughs] “Whisper” was a song that was written in one of the most crucial parts of my life. It was a life-changing moment…and this song defined it for me. This song is near to my heart.
You’re in the studio right now recording your new Album. Give us the low-down on what’s going on in there. Who’s producing it and what studio are you guys recording it at?
Yes we are and I’m extremely excited about the new songs! I’m producing the album just like I did our first album…but we have a special person in mind who we are actually sending out the final tracks to mix and master the finals.
I have a copy of your new song “Hit” from your upcoming album. It’s very different from previous tunes. I’m diggin’ it! Is there a new sound in the works?
Yes. I’m still really invested in the production and arrangements of our songs, but Yoda is much more involved with this album. We’ve established an amazing collaboration and it’s really working for us. The new songs off this album are killer! The first record I was just happy to get my songs out…but this record we’re crazy excited to get it out because we feel like this music is beyond our years and beyond our human capabilities. It’s our passion on disc and in your ears.
You had a show at the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio. Tell us about that show and that opportunity.
We were invited by an organization called Real Music to put on a showcase of a few of our tunes. This show was honestly one of the milestones of our career thus far. It was just an amazing opportunity to spread our sound.
Just for the record…I caught a festival show you guys played in New Orleans. It was amazing. Your stage presence is so laid back and cool with a rock passion. What’s behind the essence of your stage presence?
Our stage presence has hints of musicians before us. We draw from musicians that have a feel of what we would do. As well as putting energy into the songs, we really try to give the fans our true selves on stage. We don’t try to do anything or be any certain way…we just do us and give the fans a solid show. We just like to have fun up there. [laughs]
How has Sevier County and its musical history inspired you?
Music is our passion and we love and respect any form. Sevier County’s roots are saturated with country, bluegrass, and true soul…who wouldn’t be inspired by that.
When can the people of Sevier County expect to see The Fine Line?
Soon! We are booking shows everywhere right now! We are so excited about all of the opportunities that are in store for us…and Sevier County is at the top of our list.
Outside of music, what is The Fine Line all about?
We watch a lot of movies. [Kirk] Even though I don’t do it professionally, Sports is my very first true love. I played football and basketball growing up and all through high school. I lived and breathed sports. [Josh] I really enjoy going to concerts. I enjoy being creative. I do a lot of our graphic artwork and design our promotional materials.
What’s next for The Fine Line?
Unlike most bands who say they’re not, we’re in search of a record label. It’s the best way to get the most exposure to get our message out to the masses. We just signed with McLaughlin Music Group International. Their support has been amazing and has really taken us to the next level as a band.
Now is your time to plug yourselves. Where can we go buy “The Fine Line” and were can we go to keep up with The Fine Line and the new Album?
You can always buy our music on itunes.com and the album “The Fine Line” is available online at myspace.com/thefinelinemusik and we are on facebook and twitter. Check us out and help us spread the word about The Fine Line! We love and appreciate all of our fans and anyone who does anything to support or help us out! Most importantly we have a brand new website officially in the works. We promise to keep you posted on that! Stay tuned!
In my last ditch effort to describe The Fine Line, any parting words?
We want to bring the “sexy back” to being a believer. [laughs] We’ve been through fire, we’ve been through rain…but still we keep on loving. This is our avenue to give back the talents that we’ve received…and we will continue to strive for that.
