November 4, 2009 – The City of Knoxville will begin removal of the “Treble Clef” sculpture around 9 a.m., Thursday, November 5, at the corner of Gay Street and Summit Hill.
The deteriorating fiberglass and metal monument is being taken down at the recommendation of the city’s Public Art Committee, which determined – after consulting with experts – that it cannot be adequately restored.
The monument was installed in 1986 by The Knoxville News-Sentinel Co. to honor the city’s country music heritage and celebrate the newspaper’s 100th anniversary.
The bronze plaques at the base of the sculpture, which contain the names of area country music performers and donors, will be preserved, restored and reinstalled as part of a new configuration.
