Opp T. Mistic to benefit Komen Knoxville
Opp T. Mistic was painted in honor of a best friend of the artist, Kim Green. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2008 and is currently going thru a second round of chemotherapy. Green wanted to do something to raise awareness of breast cancer and Opp T. Mistic was born. This is an original acrylic painting on 24×36 stretched canvas, framed in black. Her name is a configuration of her friend’s name and attitude throughout her fight. Opp T. Mistic is being auctioned off in a Silent Auction through kgartstudioonline.com. 100% of the winning bid will go to Komen Knoxville. Artdealers.com is also presenting a check for 15% of the winning bid. The frame was donated by Smith-Strickland Interior Design Services, Knoxville TN. The painting is on display at Gift Gourmet & Interiors at Colony Place in West Knoxville, where you may also place a bid. The auction ends on November 15, 2009.
Comments on Mammography Leading to Over-Diagnosis and Over-Treatment (Dr. Eric Winer, October 2009)
Recent media attention has shed light on the issue of mammography leading to over-diagnosis and over-treatment. According to a study published in the British Medical Journal, researchers from Copenhagen analyzed breast cancer trends in the years before and after the initiation of government-run mammography screening programs in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Sweden and Norway. The data covered a period of at least seven years before and after screening. The results suggested that one in three women who were identified as having breast cancer might not have needed treatment. Unfortunately, we do not know which women would have done well without treatment, and which would develop a life-threatening (and in some cases, life-ending) disease if the cancer were not treated.
The problem with mammography is magnified when we also consider non-invasive breast cancer, or ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Click here to read more.
