Businesses Will Receive Tips on How to Get Employees ‘Up and Running’

Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon 2010Encouraging your workers to work out actually works. Area employers who want to learn how to promote fitness in the workplace are invited to attend a first-ever Employer Wellness Night sponsored by the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.

The marathon’s Wellness Night is a free event that will be held Tuesday, Feb. 9, from 6-7:30 p.m. at Radio Systems Corporation, located at 10424 Electric Avenue in West Knoxville. Local employers who have been successful in motivating their employees to run, jog and walk the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon will offer tips and share best practices for motivating employees to get exercise and become physically active.

Speakers will include Andy Baksa, former University of Tennessee track and field athlete and Clayton Homes fitness specialist; Missy Kane, Covenant Health fitness spokesperson; Katie Logan, Fort Sanders Health & Fitness Center training coordinator; and Becka Wilson, Radio Systems Corporation’s global wellness coordinator.

The panel will speak about their employers’ commitment to wellness, why they encourage participation in the marathon, and how they build excitement and participation in the marathon’s Fittest Company Challenge.

The Fittest Company Challenge is a featured activity of the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon, which will be held Sunday, March 28. The challenge is open to area employers and encourages employees of all fitness levels to participate in marathon events. For this competition, speed doesn’t matter. Winners are determined by the total combined miles completed by the company’s employees.

The challenge awards 3.1 points for completing the 5k, 6.55 points for each person in the four-person relay, 13.1 points for the half marathon and 26.2 points for the full marathon. First, second and third place awards are presented to companies in small (1-100 employees), medium (101-500 employees) and large (more than 500 employees) categories. About 25 percent of the total participants in last year’s marathon represented area businesses, according to Jason Altman, executive director of the Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon.

“The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon’s Fittest Company Challenge is an easy and fun way local businesses can encourage health and fitness among their employees,” said Altman. “Employees provide vital peer encouragement to one another for completing individual fitness goals and work together as a team to achieve organizational goals. It’s a win-win for the business and the employees.”

Attendance is free to Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon Wellness Night, but reservations are required due to space limitations.
