Kenya native Geoffrey Kiprotich, who resides in Atlanta, Ga., won the sixth annual Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon on Sunday, March 28, finishing the 26.2-mile race with a time of 2:23:22.
Andy Baksa of Knoxville, Tenn., came in second at 2:23:58, and Alan Horton of Knoxville, Tenn., was third with a time of 2:26:26.
In the women’s category, the top spot went to Kathy Wolski of Knoxville, Tenn., for the second consecutive year. Her time was 3:02:11. Erica Tedford of Maryville, Tenn., came in second at 3:06:54, and Tammy Slusser of Monroeville, Pa., came in third at 3:12:19 after placing second in 2009.
Along with the 2010 winners, any Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon participant finishing the marathon with a time under 3:10:00 for men and 3:40:00 for women now qualifies to participate in the Boston Marathon on April 19, 2010.
In the men’s half-marathon, Joseph Sitienei of Chattanooga, Tenn., finished the course at 1:10:40. Eric Bell of Knoxville, Tenn., was second with a time of 1:12:53. Third place for the men was Chris Platt of Knoxville, Tenn. He finished at 1:14:23.
In the women’s half-marathon, Emily Chaney of Morristown, Tenn., took the top spot with a time of 1:21:37. Mina Thorstenson of Arden, N.C., finished second at 1:24:05, and Laura Harnish of Goshen, Ind., finished third at 1:28:05.
In the men’s 5K run, Ed Wright of Oak Ridge, Tenn., took first for the fourth consecutive year with a time of 17:56. Doug Foster of LaFollette, Tenn., finished second at 19:55, and Patrick Parten of Powell, Tenn., finished third at 20:34.
Paula Baldasano of Knoxville, Tenn., won the women’s 5K with a time of 20:13. Faith Trammell of Knoxville, Tenn., took second place at 21:59, and Melissa Egley of Knoxville, Tenn., took third place at 22:05.
The field also included several handcyclists competing in the marathon. In the men’s category, Greg Queen of Lily, Ky., came in first with a time of 1:47:30. Joseph Beimfohr of Annandale, Va., finished second at 2:11:25, and Thomas Kahler of Clinton, Tenn., finished third at 2:18:41. The only competitor in the women’s category was Carly Waugh of Knoxville, Tenn., who finished second overall among handcyclists with a time of 1:59:50.
The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon also offered a four-person marathon relay and the one-mile Covenant Kids run.

The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon is a premier event organized by the Knoxville Track Club, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the encouragement of physical well being through running, jogging, competitive road racing, racewalking, fun runs, cross-country, and track and field.
