March 30, 2010 – The City of Knoxville’s Engineering Department will host a public meeting concerning the proposed Westland Drive Improvements Project from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 13, at the First Church of God.
The church is located at 6708 Westland Drive.
Preliminary plans for the project will be available for public review at the meeting and staff members from the city’s Engineering Department and from Vaughn & Melton, the design engineering firm, will be available to answer questions and receive comments.
The project includes the widening of two narrow bridges on Westland Drive in addition to drainage and creek channel improvements and shoulder work at various locations along Westland.
The first bridge is at Craigland Court while the second one is located near the waterwheel on Sherwood Drive. Both bridges currently lack adequate lane widths and shoulders, which will be remedied by the project.
The plans also call for approximately 1,000 feet of upstream channel improvements from the bridge at Craigland Court and adding a roadway shoulder and relocating a drainage ditch near the intersection of Westland and Rotherwood Drive.
The city tentatively expects to begin work this fall and estimates completing the project sometime next spring. There will be some temporary road closures during the course of construction.
The cost estimate for the work is approximately $850,000 and preliminary project plans can be viewed at www.cityofknoxville.org/engineering/westland.
