Many people might think that participating in Earth Day activities or becoming more eco-friendly takes too much time or money. Surprisingly, there are several things that can be done that require actions as simple as a mouse click or the flick of a switch.
“Taking any kind of steps to help the environment is always a plus,” said Jack Brundige, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Tennessee. “Our eco-friendly business practices include programs like Battery Swap, offering paperless billing to customers, and supporting associates who volunteer on Earth Day in the communities we serve.”
For those on a quest to be more environmentally-friendly, U.S. Cellular offers the following “green” tips:
Go paperless –Viewing and paying bills online are ways to make a positive impact on the environment. According to PayItGreen.com, if one million people switched to paperless billing, it would save 400,000 pounds of paper, cut down 6 million pounds of greenhouse gases and prevent 4 million gallons of wastewater from discharging into lakes, streams, and rivers in a year. In addition to online automatic bill payment, U.S. Cellular offers customers the convenience of receiving their bills electronically, which saves money and help improves the environment. To sign up for these free services, customers can visit uscellular.com, and click on “My Account.”
Practice unplugging – When you’re not charging your phone, save some energy by unplugging your phone charger and other electronic devices. Standby power exists when an electronic device and/or its charger consumes power when not actively in use. Standby power consumes six percent or more of the electricity in a typical home, according to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, at an annual cost of more than $50 per household.
Swap your battery – U.S. Cellular customers who are watching their spending closely can use the company’s industry-leading Battery Swap program to extend the life of their phone without having to purchase a new battery. Customers can swap out their dead or dying battery for a fully-charged one at no cost. Since its launch, more than 1 million batteries have been swapped out, keeping many from going to the landfill.
U.S. Cellular is also making eco-friendly choices in its stores. All U.S. Cellular stores have been equipped with energy-efficient ceramic metal halide lighting that reduces energy consumption by 25 percent as compared to traditional halogen lighting. More than 90 percent of all computers, equipment and appliances in U.S. Cellular stores are Energy Star products which are designed to reduce environmental impacts caused by excessive energy use. Products with recycled content, such as carpet, ceilings and furniture, are also used to furnish all stores.
