Heritage High School is in the running for $500,000 in a Kohl’s giveaway but desperately needs more Facebook votes to keep from slipping further out of the Top 20 category of prize winners.
The Blount County school was in the Top 20 at one time but has fallen behind as larger schools in urban areas across the U.S. have weighed in with strong surges of computer voting in the “Kohl’s Cares for Kids” program. Kohl’s is donating $500,000 each to 20 schools. Voting ends Sept. 3.
The voting surge has thwarted Heritage’s efforts to climb back in the running by jamming Kohl’s Facebook page where votes are taken. Kohl’s has assured Heritage that all votes will be recorded.
“We are facing a real uphill struggle, complicated by the crush on Kohl’s Facebook page,” said Sherry Walker, a teacher at Heritage. “We need people to keep trying on our behalf even though it may be difficult now because we can certainly put $500,000 to good use in these lean budget times.”
Walker has organized student and teacher groups to vote for Heritage. Heritage will set up a tent with computers to let fans vote at the home football game between Heritage and Karns this Friday. Walker is attempting to schedule a computer voting session at a local restaurant with wi-fi.
Walker said she is asking for help from area media to let people know that Heritage has a chance. “With it being this late in the contest, it doesn’t look like anyone else in the area can catch up. That is why we are now asking for everyone to cast any extra votes they have and help us keep this money in East Tennessee and Blount County.”
“We need the support of other schools and people in the region that want to help an East Tennessee school with a good chance to break into the Top 20 because of the total we have already gathered,” she said.
Voters can go to facebook.com/kohls to access the voting process. Walker can be reached at 865-654-6041 (cell).
