When was the last time you had an RC Cola with a moon pie?
East Tennessee’s premier event honoring senior citizens will take place on September 15 at the Knoxville Convention Center, with a distinctly southern touch. The 2010 Covenant Platinum Awards Gala Luncheon and Awards Ceremony will honor active seniors and the people who work to make their lives better.
Winners will be chosen from essays that were submitted in May and June, but event organizers say the gala isn’t just for nominees. It’s for anyone who wants a good meal, a good time and a good way to pay tribute to seniors.
“These seniors have an enthusiasm for life that’s contagious and fun,” said Covenant Health spokeswoman Missy Kane. “It makes you look forward to growing older and giving back.”
This year’s theme, “A Southern Celebration of Seniors,” focuses on southern culture and the growing number of seniors populating East Tennessee. Southern comedienne Karen Mills will entertain the crowd; the Johnson Swingtet will provide live music; and tables will be set with RC Colas and moon pies to take home.
The menu features “southern style” green beans, cheese grits and “Chicken Cordon Blue Ridge,” a specially prepared Chicken Cordon Bleu created with products from southern vendors Sweetwater Valley Farms and Benton’s.
The dessert also will have a distinctive southern flair. Each guest will receive an individual apple stack cake topped with a dollop of whip cream and a slice of dried apple for garnish.
Tickets to the gala are $20 each and must be purchased by Sept. 7. Seats may be reserved by calling 865-541-4500. For more information, visit http://www.covenanthealth.com/platinum.
