Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam will join presenting sponsor U.S. Cellular and The Knoxville News Sentinel in honoring the newspaper’s 2011 Academic Achievers on April 14 at the Knoxville Convention Center.

Haslam will be the keynote speaker at the 6 p.m. awards banquet where 324 graduating seniors representing 65 East Tennessee public and private high schools will be recognized and receive Academic Achiever certificates.

The News Sentinel has partnered with U.S. Cellular, one of the nation’s leading wireless carriers with its East Region headquarters in Knoxville, to recognize the students. U.S. Cellular is committed to education and since 2009 has invested more than $500,000 in Tennessee schools.

The Academic Achievers honorees are chosen by the schools. They are the top graduating seniors in their class as well as leaders in school activities and in their communities. This select group of students has excelled in academics, athletics, art and music, community activism and many other areas. They include National Merit Finalists, University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Scholars, Knox County’s Junior Miss, President’s Volunteer Service awardees and AP scholars among dozens of other awards and achievements.
Nearly 1,000 people are expected to attend the awards ceremony and banquet, including students, parents and school representatives. Student photos and biographies will be featured in the News Sentinel from April 3-April 14 and can be accessed by visiting http://www.knsprojects.com/achievers.
The News Sentinel’s Academic Achievers program has honored over 7,600 students since its inception in 1985.
