The following is the obituary of Jack Cook as it appears in The Mountain Press
Jack Cook, age 67, of Sevierville, died suddenly at his home, Wednesday, August 29, 2012.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 13 years, Mary Maness Cook; his son Darren Cook and wife Lori, son Eric Cook and wife Mary, all of Pace, FL; step-daughter Amanda Maness Sweat and husband Rob of Sevierville; and step-son, Josh Maness and wife Deanna of San Diego, CA. Jack has 12 surviving grand-children and one great-grandchild all of whom were his pride and joy.
Jack grew up in Springfield, OH. He joined the Navy at the age of 18 and proudly served his country in the Vietnam War in Naval Security Group as a Communications Technician and Intelligence Team Leader.
Jack served in law enforcement for many years in Pensacola, Florida and Baker, Louisiana. During this time he was a basketball referee, coached little league baseball, and worked as an independent contract painter, all while serving many volunteer organizations.
He lived in London, KY for five years where he operated his own debt collection agency, drove a school bus, and volunteered with the Sheriff’s Department.
Jack moved to Sevierville in 1998 and worked in marketing until his retirement in 2008 due to a disability. At the time of his death his volunteer commitments included: Assistant Coordinator of the Sevier Co. Chaplain Corp, Fraternal Order of Police Chaplain, Douglas Cooperative Board of Directors, Member of Sevierville Lodging Assoc., Pigeon Forge Hospitality Assoc., and Smoky Mountain Lodging Assoc. Jack also served as emcee for countless local events. Over the years Jack was a tireless volunteer for many organizations such as Cherish the Child Foundation, The Lord’s Child, United Way, Sevierville Sunrise Rotary Club, as well as many other charitable organizations too numerous to mention.
Jack was a disabled veteran who dearly loved his country and continued to give of himself after his death through organ donation. In Lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to The Gathering or to any organization dedicated to serving the needs of neglected and abused children.
The family will receive friends 4-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, with a memorial service to follow at 6:30 p.m. at The Gathering, 1250 Middle Creek Road, Sevierville, TN. Arrangements by Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.
