As I was in prayer one day, the Lord directed to Revelations 2:4, which says you have left your first love. That was a spiritual jolt that I hadn’t expected. As I sat there the Lord said, “Not just you, but my church, my bride has backed away.” Standing at arms length distracted by all the activity in today’s christian world.
I got to thinking about my “first love” in the human sense. I met my “first love” when I was a young woman. When we met there was an instant bond. The more time we spent together, the more time we wanted to spend together. At times when we were apart my thoughts were of him. I talked about every opportunity I got. I even carried a picture of him and showed it off every chance I got.
It was so exciting when he would surprise me with a special gift. Something that he had chosen just for me. Something that truly expressed his love for me.
As time progressed our love grew. I even thought that if he had to, he would die for me. We became closer and finally joined into a covenant by becoming husband and wife. Our days were filled with such happiness. Eventually our family of two became a family of four.
As the business of life began to fill my days, the amount of time spent with my “first love” became less often. There were times when my “first love” wanted to spend time with me. He wanted to have a conversation with me, but I was so busy with “activity” that I didn’t even hear half of what he was trying to tell me. The things he wanted to whisper, that were for my ears only, were not as easy for me to hear.
There are things that happen in life that can take you away from your “first love”. It can start out with something as simple as business. Getting involved in things, even good things, that create distractions. These distractions can pull you farther and farther away.
Another thing that can take you away from your “first love” is death. After the near physical death of my “first love” I realized how valuable and precious our relationship was.
You may ask what my “first love”, being my husband, has to do with the Lord. Well, it was an illustration. If you go back and read this again, remembering your Christian walk with the Lord, you will understand.
Remember the early days when you were so excited to share your life with Him. When you wanted to tell everyone you knew (and even those you didn’t know) about your “FIRST LOVE”. The long conversations you had, where you did just as much listening as you did talking. All the wonderful ways He answered your prayers and surprised you with gifts of love. Remember the ultimate gift He gave you when He DID give His life for you. He paid the price of His life so you may live with Him for all eternity.
You too entered into a covenant, with the Lord, agreeing that He would be your “FIRST LOVE” for now and always.
Remember times in your life when you may have been so busy with “activities” that you didn’t realize your “FIRST LOVE” was waiting to spend some precious time with you. Those “activities” became so many and the distractions became so many that there became a spiritual death toward your “FIRST LOVE”. Well, during that time He was longing for you to come back to Him. He was waiting for you to return your eyes to His so that your focus would be on Him alone. He waited for you to return close to Him so you could feel the very beat of His heart.
NOW is the time that the Lord is calling His bride to prepare herself for her “FIRST LOVE”. It is time for her to draw close and prepare herself for the wedding of all weddings. It is time to proclaim the love you have for your “FIRST LOVE”, now and forever.
