As one of her last acts as the Ambassador for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park anniversary, Dolly Parton will plant a new hybrid American Chestnut Tree on Friday, September 4, 2009, Noon EST, at the Dollywood Theme Park, Backporch Theatre, to honor the accomplishments of her Uncle Bill Owens and to launch a hopeful effort to repopulate the Great Smoky Mountains with this lost tree species. For 25 years, Mr. Owens has been working with the American Chestnut Foundation to achieve his dream of ensuring the protection of the American chestnut tree for future generations. The tree will be on display at Dollywood.
