More people visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park than any other park in the United States. The park receives approximately 9 million visitors a year. Established on June 15, 1934, the park consists of over 500,000 acres.
Swallowing a sword is amazing on its own, but imagine sword swallowing with a mouthful of live cockroaches. That’s exactly what Travis Fessler will do at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Gatlinburg Odditorium on Saturday, February 27th at 2:27 pm local time – all part of World Sword Swallowers Day. Fessler is part of an all-star sword swallowing lineup that includes Chris Steel and Erik Kloeker, the world’s youngest professional sword swallower. The public can watch these amazing performers for free. Special accommodations can be made for the media. The University of Tennessee Athletics Department has teamed up with the American Red Cross to raise funds for its Haitian relief efforts. Members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be on-hand to take donations for the Red Cross before the Lady Vols’ 2 p.m. basketball game against Florida on Sunday, Feb. 14 as well as the Vols’ match-up against Kentucky on Feb. 27 at noon. “We at the University of Tennessee are so blessed, especially in the athletic department; it would be simply selfish of us not to step-in and help out wherever we are needed. The student-athletes here have very generous hearts,” said SAAC President and Lady Vol rower Mary Beth Dreusike. “I am so grateful to be in a position of leadership and power where I can make a difference for this devastated country.” Fans can also send a donation by texting `HAITI’ to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund. The 17th Annual Sevier County Student Art Show gets underway Friday, February 19, 2010 with an opening reception and awards ceremony for the teachers, artists and families from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Arrowmont. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The student art will be on display in the Painting Studio at Arrowmont until Friday, March 5. Each year the Sevier County Arts Council organizes the exhibit to showcase the talent of students from all grades, including those who are home schooled. All media is represented in this year’s show, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and glass. This year’s entries were juried by Karen Green, the Gallery Coordinator at Arrowmont. “It is a privilege and honor to be a part of any art jury opportunity. Registration open now for Covenant Kids Run and Fittest School Challenge The Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon Kids Run is expanding its Fittest School Challenge to encourage greater participation among youth in East Tennessee. In addition to Knox County, the challenge is now open to elementary schools in Loudon, Anderson, Sevier, Roane and Blount counties. The Fittest School Challenge is a friendly competition among elementary schools to promote healthy physical activities and get kids excited about exercising. Children age 12 and younger can participate. Schools register for the competition and provide a total student body count. The top school in each county with the highest percentage of student participation at the March 27 Covenant Kids Run will win the title of Fittest School. Knoxville Zoo is looking for friendly and energetic people at their annual Job Fair, which will be held Saturday, February 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the zoo’s Lee Congleton Conference Center. Seasonal positions are available in the zoo’s Guest Services department, including retail sales, food service, carousel and camel ride operations and membership and ticket sales. The zoo is also hiring for positions that will assist with educational programs and in the Clayton Family Kids Cove contact yard and playground. First-round interviews will be conducted during the Job Fair. Some positions will begin work immediately and others will start on a staggered schedule throughout the late winter and early spring. Those interested in attending the Job Fair should come to the Ranger Station, to the right of the zoo’s main entrance, for directions to the Lee Congleton Conference Center.
