KODAK, Tenn. – The Tennessee Smokies, Double-A minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce this afternoon the addition of infielder Marquez Smith to the team’s active roster in advance of tonight’s series opener with the Huntsville Stars. In a related roster move, outfielder Brandon Guyer has been placed on the disabled list.
Smith is no stranger to East Tennessee as he spent the better part of 2009 with the Smokies, hitting .280 with 10 home runs and 49 RBIs in 113 games. This season he’s hit .217 (15-for-69) in 25 games for the Triple-A Iowa Cubs, with one home run and 10 RBIs. The Cubs selected Smith in the eighth round of the 2007 MLB Draft.
Guyer heads to the disabled list for the second time this season (shoulder). In 21 games with Tennessee this year, he’s hit .262 (17-for-65) with one home run and seven RBIs. Guyer was the Cubs’ fifth round draft pick in the 2007 MLB Draft.
