T
ennessee Smokies pitcher Chris Carpenter was named today by the Southern League as its “Pitcher of the Week,” for the week of June 7-13. The award is Carpenter’s first of the season, second for the Smokies’ pitching staff, and fourth league award for the Smokies in 2010.
Carpenter’s two starts this past week played a key role in the Smokies’ stay atop the Southern League North Division. Last Tuesday, he held Huntsville scoreless over 6.1 innings in Tennessee’s 3-0 win, striking out six. And while not factoring in yesterday’s decision against West Tenn, Carpenter kept the Smokies in the game as he allowed only two runs. Tennessee would eventually win 7-5.
On the year, Carpenter is 5-2 with a 3.40 ERA. The Bryan, Ohio native, ranked the Cubs eighth-ranked prospect according to Baseball America, was selected by Chicago in the 16th round of the 2008 MLB First-Year Player Draft.
